Part Two – July
My son, do not forget my law,
But let your heart keep my commands;
For length of days and long life
And peace they will add to you.

Week of July 6
“My son, do not forget my law,”
“Do not forget” is the same as saying “remember”. In today’s culture, we have dozens of tools for remembering things. We have date books, calendars, reminder apps, Microsoft Outlook, or even the most basic of tools, the sticky note. However, this verse commands us to do more than merely remember an appointment or a task. “Do not forget my law” is, in fact, a behavior, meaning to fully embrace God’s Word, adhere to it, and be obedient to it. Instead of relying upon our own abilities and knowledge, or upon man-made tools like apps and sticky notes, we must actively internalize His Word!
(Deuteronomy 6:6-7, Psalm 119:11, Matthew 6:33)

“but let your heart keep my commands;”
For many of us, emojis have become ingrained in our communication. Yet, emojis are one of the most basic forms of symbolism. Smiley faces, frowny faces, green faces – we all know what these symbols mean, and we know what emotion, thought or action they are meant to convey. In this section of Proverbs 3:1, the emoji, or symbol, is the heart. The core of our being and the source of our actions and decisions is illustrated by the heart. As Christians, we are told to keep God’s commandments within our heart; therefore, we must internalize His Word, and keep it safely in our hearts.

“for length of days and long life”
Today’s modern culture is full of cure-all’s and quick fixes. Sure, some of these things actually work and can be quite beneficial. However, as Christians, we know that our physical and mental health are blessings from God. Look at the benefits written in Proverbs 3:2 – we will have “length of days and long life”. However, living to old age is not guaranteed for all Christians; instead, this verse insinuates a long(er) life for Christians who actively remember God’s commands. Additionally, this verse implies that a Christian’s life will be filled with quality, purpose, and blessings that result from living a life of obedience to God. Hence, the wisdom we gain from studying God’s word, actively remembering it, and keeping it within our hearts has a profound impact on our well-being.

“and peace they will add to you”
The great theoretical physicist Albert Einstein is credited as saying:
“Peace cannot be maintained by force. It can only be achieved through understanding.”
Isn’t that the whole point of these verses from Proverbs? When we seek to understand the wisdom found only in God’s Word (by remembering His commands and keeping them close within our hearts) the result is Peace. Indeed, when we live a life aligned with God’s Will, we can look forward to the true peace that from placing our trust in the Lord. What a powerful incentive for embracing God’s commands!
(Psalm 119:165, Philippians 4:7, Hebrews 6:18-19)

As you in the sun, also soak in a time of prayer. Take a moment to ask yourself some hard questions: are you relying upon God’s strength, or are you relying on your own knowledge and abilities? Do you trust in His promises? Are actively remembering God’s commands and keeping them within your heart? While you are in this quiet time with God, surrender your doubts and uncertainties to Him, and (re)commit to keeping your heart active in His Word. Thank Him for all that He has given to you. As you enjoy the rest of your summer and all of your favorite activities, be sure to finish this Summer Reading List so that you will be blessed with all of God’s many promises! Amen!
